Army

Basics

Uniform: Green

Mission: Defend the planets of the empire.

Personnel

Total personnel: about 400 million actives.
Active reserve: about 16 billion that train at least yearly.
Wartime personnel: about 40 billion after the activation of all reserves and general call up, with 60 billion after a training period and 140 billion eventually if need be.
The local non imperial armed forces amount to about 5 billion with about 60 billion after the activation of all reserves and general call up and 120 billion after a training period.

Reserve categories:

  • Category 1 reserve is about 600 million in service. They train about 12 weeks/year. They are mostly recent active duty soldiers. It is fairly common to do “light 20” with 5 years in active service and then 15 in active reserve. Mobilization plans call for these to be combat ready within 48 hours.
  • Category 2 reserve are about 1 billion. They train about 4 weeks/year. They are mostly former active duty members that are further from their active duty. A significant part are 20 year men, as the combination of the 20 year pay and category 2 reserve pay allows for fairly good lifestyle without any further income. Mobilization plans call for these to be combat ready within a week.
  • Category 3 reserve is about 14.5 billion total. They train about 1 week/year. These do have some old active duty members, but most are people who have gone through a 6 month basic training and few years later a 3 month specialization training. Mobilization plans call for these to be combat ready within three weeks.
  • Category 4 reserve is about 20 billion. They are not active reserve and do not train, but are people who have had the training in the past and can thus be called up with only a “refresher” training needed. Any former active duty or reserves member that is not member of the active reserve is automatically here. Also any former members of other imperial services that are not part of their reserves are counted as category 4 army reserve. Mobilization plans call for these to be combat ready within two months.
  • Category 5 reserve is about 20 billion. They are not active reserve and do not train and have not had the basic training but will do so if needed. Basically this is a group of people pre-picked to be part of the army in case of a major war. Mobilization plans call for these to be combat ready within 6 months.
  • Category 6 reserve is about 80 billion. They are the people who will be called up after a major war has started. The people for these are not picked, but there is basic combat equipment available for them. Mobilization plans call for about 20 billion to be combat ready within a year and then 20 more billion every 6 months.

Note that at any given time there are more than 500 million reservists training in addition to the 400 million actives.

Training

The shooter or sniper training packages are most common. Though there specialists of all sorts.

Note that active army has Monocrys/Nanoweave Subdermal Armor implant instead of bioplast skin.

Deployment

Army personnel mostly operate on the planets, with about 20% deployed to navy as ship board troops or navy base security.

They operate in all systems, as even many minor colonies normally have small army troop assigned(could be only a single squad).

Note: For unknown reasons army troops deployed on navy ships as ship troops are termed “Marines” and those deployed with the patrol are “Colonial Marines”. Those deployed for ground duty outside primary and secondary systems are known as “Colonial troops”.

Ranks

Army troops tend to be more formal with ranks and rank structures than many other services and full ranks are normally used in all situations.

Structure

The basic army structure is a fire team with a corporal in charge.

  • An field army consists of 3 corps and support elements. Typical size is 55764 troops.
    • Corps consist of 3 divisions and support elements. Typical size is 16884 troops.
      • Divisions consist of 3 regiments and support elements. Typical size is 5112 troops.
        • Regiments consist of 3 battalions and support elements. Typical size is 1548 troops.
          • Battalions consist of 3 brigades and support elements. Typical size is 468 troops.
            • Companies consist of 3 platoons and a HQ platoon (for a total of 144 troops). In vehicles there are normally 10 vehicles+support/supply vehicles.
              • Hq platoon consists of:
                • 3 man company command element: First Lieutenant+2 commo/EW
                • 3 man medical: doctor, 2 medic.
                • 10 man Supply squad: Master sergeant.
                • 3 man hq element: scribe, commo, Forward observer
                • 3 man transport: 3 drivers.
                • 3 man supply: cook, supply, tech.
                • 10 man scout squad
                  • 3*3 man scout/forward observer fire teams+sergeant.
                • 10 man heavy weapons squad
                • 2 cannon teams with a 25mm autocannon.
                • 1 heavy missile team with TML
              • A platoon consists of 3 Squads,a 3 person command element and a 3 person heavy fire (for a total of 36 troops). In vehicles there are normally 3 vehicles.
                • command element: Second Lieutenant, commo/EW technician, Gunnery Sergeant
                • Heavy fire team: 3 troops with pistols and one MLAWs and one IML.
                • A squad consists of 3 Fire teams and a sergeant (for a total of 10 in the infantry). In vehicles the squad leader is normally one of the vehicle leaders.
                  • Infantry fire teams consist of 3 troops. They tend to be in heavy powered armor in the main army and have:
                  • Corporal with a 10mm smg+grenade launcher
                  • Sniper with a sniper rifle (15mm for powered armor troops, 10mm for non powered)
                  • Machine gunner with a chaingun.
                • Armor and vehicle crews are normally squads and tend to have 2 people in most cases.

Equipment

Armor

Infantry:

  • Army active infantry is switching to medium/heavy cybersuits with 31 million heavy and 103 million medium in service and 6.25/20.6 million more/year.
  • The rest of active infantry is in Heavy Battlesuits(200 million).
  • Category 1 reserve infantry is converting to Heavy Battlesuits, with about 200 million in reserve service. The rest(200 million) use Commando Battlesuits.
  • Category 2 reserve infantry have mostly Commando Battlesuits, with about 1 billion total in service. About 300 million still use increasingly hard to maintain ancient(TL9) Powered combat armors.
  • Category 3 reserve infantry have Powered Space Armor(3.5 billion) or Powered Combat Hardsuit(7.5 billion) (all TL 10 models)
  • Category 4 reserve infantry have nanoweave tacsuits(15 billion).
  • Category 5 reserve infantry have nanoweave tacsuits(10 billion) or nanoweave suits with nanoweave tac vest(6 billion).
  • Category 6 reserve infantry have reflex tacsuits(20 billion) or reflex suits with tac vest(rest)

Specialists and support:

  • Army actives have mostly switched to Light Cybersuits with 136 million light total in use and 27.4 million produced for the army/year the rest is in Commando battle suits.
  • Category 1 reserve uses Commando Battlesuits or Powered Combat Armor.
  • Category 2 reserve uses Powered Combat Armor or Powered Space Armor.
  • Category 3 reserve uses mostly Nanoweave Suits though some use the Powered Combat Armor or Powered Space Armor.
  • Category 4 and 5 reserves have Nanoweave Suits.
  • Category 6 reserve has reflex suits reserved.

Implants

  • Active duty troops have the implants listed under Ranger bionics but with Monocrys(about 125 mil) or nanoweave(rest) subdermal armor instead of the Bioplastic Skin.
  • Category 1-2 reserves have basically the same, but with nanoweave subdermal armor.
  • Category 3 and 4 reserves have troops that have the same implants as category 1-2(about 3 billion-most being previously higher category reserve), but most only have video comm and biomonitor.

Weapons

  • Most heavy power armor infantry uses ETC 15mm rifles with 15mm etc chain guns as squad heavy weapons.
  • Other active infantry and category 1-3 reserve infantry use 10mm ETC rifle/carbine with ETC storm chain guns as squad heavy weapons. Few units use blaster rifles with heavy blasters as support weapons.
  • Category 5-6 infantry only have 10mm ETC pistol/smg type weapons.
  • Most non infantry actives have heavy blaster pistols or 10mm etc pistols/smgs.
  • All other non infantry has 10mm ETC pistol/smg type weapons.

Vehicles

  • Active infantry use grav IFVs and dragon heavy tanks.
  • Colonial troops use g-carriers and scout speeders mostly.
  • Marines and colonial marines do no normally have vehicles assigned as they are mostly transported by navy/patrol assets like assault shuttles, though most units have some speeders and maybe a few grav cars assigned.
  • Category 1-2 reserves use grav IFVs and Armored grav sleds.
  • Most category 3 reserves do not have vehicles assigned. About 12% train on older combat vehicles like air cushion tanks/IFVs and would receive them from mothballs in mobilization. Rest are deployed from g-carriers in training and would mostly use civilian vehicles in actual deployment.
  • Higher category reserves do not have vehicles assigned and would use civilian vehicles in deployment.

Interaction

Army

  • Lots of army troops serve on navy ships as marines so interactions are fairly common.

Survey

  • There is normally very little interaction, as Survey operates mostly in areas where the army does not.

Postal service

  • Army and the postal service have very little interaction.

Marshals

  • Though they operate mostly in same systems, there is very little interaction except when marshals investigate some crime within navy.

Patrol

  • Army troops are deployed on both as ship troops on patrol ships and to protect patrol bases.

Science and Environment

  • Army and the Science and Environment have very little interaction.

Safety

  • Army and Safety have very little interaction.

Education and public information

  • Army and the Education and public information have very little interaction.

Weapon control

  • Army and the Weapon control have very little interaction, except that army might offer heavier firepower in support of some major weapon control operations.

Treasury

  • Army and the Treasury have very little interaction.

Palace guard

  • Army and the Palace guard have very little interaction, but most palace guard troops have army background.

Rangers

  • Rangers and the army have very little interaction, except for the colonial troops.

Special Tactics and Reconnaissance

  • Like all other services army offers assistance when asked.

Local forces:

  • The army often trains with the local ground forces, but have very little interaction with others.
