Imperium basics

Starsystems

The empire consists of about 83000 inhabited star systems that are seen as imperial systems and about 530 000 additional colonies.

  • One system is the capital system. It has more than 200 billion people.
  • 174 are primary systems. They have an average(and mean) population of about 100 billion people each.
  • Slightly below 17400 secondary systems. They have an average population of about 1 billion people each and a mean population of about 100 million.
  • Rest of the about 83000 imperial systems are classified as tertiary. They have an average population of 10 million people and a mean population of about 1 million.
  • There are an additional 530 000 star systems with a smaller colony, mining station or similar. They have an average population of 100 000 people each, but a mean population of only about 500 people.

The empire claims an area of 1200 parsecs across from side to side and all the way to “top and bottom” of the galactic disk(about 300 pc high until it gets thin), but given that volume is 339 million cubic parsecs and that the volume has approximately 41 million star systems and the fastest starships take 267 days to travel from one end to other, only about 1 in 67 star systems in the area has any presence from the empire. In practice very few of the colonies and tertiary systems are more than 300 parsecs from core and none of the larger systems are.

The primary systems are each owned by one of the great noble families. The secondary systems are all owned by a lesser noble house each, tertiary systems are mostly owned as additional systems by great noble houses, but a large number are formerly independent planets that have joined the empire.

There are more than 320 000 other inhabited planets in the area outside the empire control, but the average population of them is much smaller.

Population

There are about 3.6*10^13 people in the empire.

About half of the people live in primary systems and about half in secondary with only about 2% in tertiary and 0.2% in colonies. Even just the core system has about 3 times the total population of all the 530 000 colony systems and about 1/3 the population sum of all the populations of tertiary systems.

There is no exact census on the inhabitants of the non imperial planets as a whole, the estimates put the total other human population at about 1.2*10^13, making the empire have about 3/4 of all humans.

Politics

Politically the empire has the emperor and a parliament with two chambers, both with 522 members.

There are 174 great noble houses, slightly less than 17400 lesser noble houses and slightly below 1.74 million minor noble houses.

By the constitution there are 174 great houses and maximally 100 times lesser and 10000 times minor noble houses. If a house loses great noble status for some reason(and few such have happened though the years, mostly due to treason), one of the lesser noble houses has to be appointed as a greater house within a year and a day. Whereas there is no time limit or absolute requirement to fill the ranks of the lower houses, but they tend to be reasonably close to the maximum(normally less than 1% below)

The chamber of nobles has:

  • 174 members from the great houses, each house sending one representative.
  • 174 members from the lesser houses, each 99 to 100 houses sending one representative.
  • 174 members from the minor houses, each 9900 to 10000 houses sending one representative.

The chamber of people has its members elected directly based on population. There is currently about 1 representative/69 billion people.

Currently it is as follows:

  • Core system: 3
  • The Primary systems: 259 total
  • The secondary systems: 250 total
  • The tertiary systems and colonies 10 total

All three parties have different powers, but the emperor(due to “unity”) and the chamber of nobles(Due to being able to block any action by the other parties with a 2/3 vote and the sheer amount of monetary resources that the nobles control) tend to be dominant.

The high council consists of 6 members: 3 from the nobles and 3 from chamber of people.

Laws and customs

The basic laws are the same everywhere, but with some variations on the local levels.

See laws

The imperium has many cultures in effect that cause problems when communicating, though with many central things in common mitigate the problems if the different parties make an effort to understand each other.

See: cultural familiarities

Languages

Everyone in the empire should be able to speak Imperial to at least accented level as all the imperial services like mail are only offered in that language.

See: Languages

Information and mail

Basic information transfer is cheap. Even sending data interstellar distances does not cost a lot, but does take a while to arrive.

See: Data transfer and Mail

The imperial postal service serves all imperial worlds, most colonies and many non-imperial worlds at a cheap price making them the normal method of data transfer.

See: service

There are no TV station type things, though of course all the governments and corporations have their own information sites, most with a lot of programs and such. Most people subscribe to one or more entertainment services and one or more news services. Both markets used to be dominated by few local heavyweights in both categories, but the much lower recent rates for information transfer have caused a big rise in smaller insterstellar organizations in both categories. Many of the smaller services are specialized in some niche market.

Travel

Travel between starsystems is fairly expensive for most people and while doing things like taking a holiday to some other starsystem is not uncommon at all, most people have no reason to do interstellar travel at all.

Imperial military

The imperial service is a unified service with everyone part of the same service in theory. In practice the different branches are mostly independent, services but it very common for personnel to do tours of duty in other brances.

The total active size in peacetime is about 1.3*10^9 people and they operate almost 9 million starships. The total wartime strength is about 4.6*10^10 people and about 20 million starships.
