System defense forces

Primary systems

A typical major system has 1-2 Secondary fleets assigned from the empire. They are usually augmented by few Cruiser taskforces and several Frigate task forces.

The system defense forces tend to have 20-200 Victory-class local defense cruisers as core, those might be supported by a 100-1000 Deimos-class corvettes, 1000-10 000 Panther fighters and 10 000-100 000 Assegai fighters.

There are normally 2-10 Gibraltar-class monitors, 10-50 Citadel-class battle stations and 2000-20 000 Sentinel-class defense platforms.

There are likely 200 000-1 million army troops and 200 million to 1 billion local defense force troops/police.

Secondary systems

About a third have one of the Cruiser taskforces from navy assigned, the remaining have several Frigate task forces.

The system defense forces tend to have 1-10 Victory-class local defense cruisers as core, those might be supported by a 5-50 Deimos-class corvettes, 50-500 Panther fighters and 500-5000 Assegai fighters.

About 700 systems have 1-2 Gibraltar-class monitors.

All have 3-30 Warden-class battle stations and about 100-1000 Sentinel-class defense platforms.

There are likely 5 000-20 000 army troops and 2 to 10 million local defense force troops/police.

Tertiary systems

All of these have at least one of the navy Frigate task forces or the corresponding patrol Heavy task forces

These might have a single Victory-class local defense cruiser as core, but most likely not. There are likely 2-10 Deimos-class corvettes, 20-100 Panther fighters and 200-1000 Assegai fighters.

All have 1-8 Warden-class battle stations and about 100-1000 Sentinel-class defense platforms.

There are likely 1000-500 000 army troops and 20 000 to 100 000 local defense force troops/police.

There are likely 200-1000 army troops and 200 to 1000 local defense force troops.

Colonies

Larger colonies are likely to have one of the patrol Light task forces though the majority do not have any forces currently.

The increasing number of the patrol light task forces has increased the proportion of the colonies that do have such lately.

About 70 000 colonies have some local defenses like:

Maybe 100 000 others have something like:

An increasing number are getting the fighter forces as the imperium transfers Nightgaunts,Lancers and Meteors to local forces.

Most larger colonies have some local defense force a typical size is 1% of the population.

There are almost always some army colonial troops present in any but the smallest colonies. The 70 000 larger colonies have an average of 250 army troops, the next size 100 000 colonies have an average of 150 troops and the remaining 360 000 colonies have an average of 50 troops.

Notes

Many system defense forces have received old imperial gear to augment them. So any of the above fighter forces might have any of following:

  • Local fighters upgraded to Nightgaunts instead of Assegais, this is specially likely in the more important systems.
  • The heavy fighter numbers augmented by Lancers
  • An increasing number of Meteors are also in local force use. Though some pilots grumble about upgrading to fighters where the production date might well be 150 years in past but they are a genuine upgrade in capacity compared to the equally ancient Assegai they mostly replace.

Anson-class scouts are everywhere in local forces. The imperiusm has sold/transferred about a million Ansons to local forces and there were about another million there already.

Any of the imperial forces can be moved away if needed elsewhere, thus it is even fairly likely to see a Tertiary system occasionally with no imperial forces and the larger systems with less than indicated number.

Some system defense forces are already testing TL 11 designs for local defense use, but none have started any serial production yet.

Note that there are typically about 40 times the army numbers in army reserves in most systems. In the colonies the army reserves might well have their basic gear at home for quick call-up. Such forces might theoretically be category 3 or 4 reserves, but count the combat readiness time in hours, not weeks or months.
