Ranger

Basics

Uniform: Black base, red head stripe for colonial service. (armors have other red elements too)

Total personnel: about 90,000

Mission:Provide law enforcement in the outback.

Training

Use the base character training package.

Typical ranger is an investigator.

Each ranger is expected to be able to do investigations, survive in the wilds and participate as a crew member in their ship.

Deployment

Most rangers are deployed in small teams and spend their time in colonies helping local law enforcement and tracking down criminals that act across systems.

They have law enforcement powers in all of the outback.

They are usually deployed by scout ships, most of them are ships removed from other imperial service. Most (barely) are now Cossack-class, but only a year or two years ago most were still Anson-class, the replacement of Ansons is expected to be complete within 5 years. They also have few Roswell-class class ships for the quick deployment teams.

There are ranger stations in all sectors that will work as supply bases and coordination points.

Ranks

Almost no privates, due to the demanding nature and small groups of rangers sent out. Some office workers and ship maintenance personnel might be privates, but the typical “Ranger” is a NCO. Typical ranks are “Ranger” and “Master Ranger”. Real ranks are used very seldom.

Interaction

Navy

  • Rangers and the navy have very little interaction, operating mostly in different places.

Army

  • If the rangers need extra ground muscle, they turn to colonial troops.
  • If colonial troops uncover crime, rangers usually investigate it.
  • Rangers and the rest of the army have very little interaction.

Survey

  • Though survey works also in all the systems where rangers work, there is normally very little interaction.

Postal service

  • Rangers occasionally help with the rare postal inspector who tracks some crime to the outback.

Marshals

  • Rangers occasionally work with marshals when a crime spans both inner worlds and the outback.

Patrol

  • Rangers work a lot with patrol.
  • If the rangers need extra muscle, they turn to patrol ships
  • If the patrol uncovers crime, rangers usually investigate it.
  • They work together also a lot on smuggling investigations involving the outback.

Science and Environment

  • Rangers and the Science and Environment have very little interaction.

Safety

  • Rangers and Safety have very little interaction, though there is occasional safety inspection in the outback that might be coordinated with the rangers.

Education and public information

  • Rangers and the Education and public information have very little interaction.

Weapon control

  • Rangers and the Weapon control have very little interaction, though occasional tracking of stolen weapons might lead to the outback and thus joined operations.

Treasury

  • Rangers and the Treasury have very little interaction.

Palace guard

  • Rangers and the Palace guard have very little interaction.

Special Tactics and Reconnaissance

  • It is very rare for a Special Tactics and Reconnaissance to operate where rangers do, but like all other services rangers offer assistance when asked.

Local forces:

  • Rangers coordinate with local police forces in the outback very often, but very little with anyone else.
